The book - which recalls in this context its previous works Typee and Omoo - describes the wanderings of a sailor, who, after leaving his whaler goes traveling the South Pacific. Unlike her first two novels, the highly philosophical Mardi has led some to say that it was the first work of Herman Melville to show the true potential of the author.
